DIY Friday: Ribbon Curtain

Ribbon has always made an appearance in one way or another during weddings and events, but lately we’ve seen it take a more greedy part than it’s previous place atop a present. Wedding planners and DIY brides alike are now utilizing these satiny strands of color in amazingly creative ways. Garlands, drapery, chair embellishments, and chandeliers are being overtaken by these hungry little decorations to produce the most colorful and amazing decorations.

One of ribbon’s best qualities is its versatility. Revamp your tired color scheme with some ribbon to add some texture and variety. Whether you’re going for a bright, colorful scheme or a more delicate and classy look, ribbon is the perfect tool for customizing your event and adding that finishing touch.

Walk with me through this tutorial to discover how we created this gorgeous, yet simple ribbon curtain backdrop for our photoshoot.

  • Scissors

  • A PVC pipe or curtain rod

How to:

Step 1

Measure out the length that you’ll want to curtain to be.

Step 2

Cut out a strip of ribbon that doubles the size of the desired length plus about an inch extra (you’ll need to make sure there’s enough for the loop as well).

Example: We desired a curtain that fell around 7 feet from top to bottom. To get this look we measured out 84 inches then doubled it to make 168 inches. From there we added an extra 1 inch to account for the loop.

Step 3

Cut the first strip of ribbon for the desired drop length. Then, using the first strip as a guide, cut out the remaining pieces of ribbon for the width of your backdrop.

Step 4

Fold a strip of ribbon in half and wrap it under the pipe or rod. Then pull it through the loop. Do this for all the strips.

Step 5 (optional)

If you would like to camouflage the pipe or rod, simply wrap ribbon around it before looping the measured strips. All of this is dependent on the desired look and number of ribbons you’d like to have. If you’re going for a full look you may not need to wrap the pipe or rod.

And that’s all there is to it!

The joy of this project is the room for creativity to flow, so let it ooze out for more personalization. For our curtain we chose satin ribbon in two sizes (⅞ inches and 1 ½ inches thick). This, however, is just a guideline. Pairing different colors, sizes and types of ribbon add some depth to your wall. For example, pair satin with either organdy or lace ribbon. Or try a ⅞ inch thick ribbon with ⅜. The possibilities are limitless! Give it your best shot and send us your custom design.
