How to Shop for Rectangular Tablecloths

Tablecloths are tablecloths, right? Wrong! There are so many different types of wedding linens, from  Most people know little to nothing about shopping for wedding linens, but LinenTablecloth is happy to let you in on a few tips! Read on to find everything you need to know about how to shop for rectangular tablecloths.

Rectangular Tablecloths for Weddings

How can you find the rectangular tablecloth that’s right for you? Ask yourself three questions:

  • What size round tablecloths make sense for my wedding theme or venue type?
  • Will I be layering my tables with linens like table overlays or table runners?
  • Will I be matching my tablecloths to chair covers and napkins?

Rectangular tablecloths are available in a variety of sizes to fit the needs of your special event. Instead of guessing how a certain sized tablecloth will fit your tables, try LinenTablecloth’s tablecloth sizing tool! It’s a free online tool that allows users to input the size of their wedding tables and find the perfect look for their wedding tablescapes. How do you want your tablecloth to fit your table? You can opt for a full drop, half drop, or something in between. Below are the measurements for half and full drop table linens based on two common sizes of rectangular tables:

6 ft. (30 x 72 in.) rectangular table:

8 ft. (30 x 96 in.) rectangular table::

Want to calculate the drop of your rectangular tablecloth? Subtract the table length from the linen length and the table width from the linen width, and then divide both differences by two. That means if you have a 4ft. (30 x 48 in.) rectangular table with a 70 x 120 in. tablecloth, you start by subtracting 30 from 70 (70-30=40) and 48 from 120 (120-48=72). Then you divide 40 by 2 (40/2=20) and 72 by 2 (72/2=36) which means your tablecloth will drop 20 inches widthwise and 36 inches lengthwise. Most event tables stand approximately 30 inches from the floor, so the example provided means the tablecloth would pool on the floor lengthwise because it hangs 36 inches. Does the drop length of your wedding linens really matter? It’s completely up to your personal preference, but in general a full drop is usually perceived as a more formal look than the halfway or less than halfway drop which tends to indicates a casual event atmosphere.

The next big decision is choosing fabric material for your tablecloths. LinenTablecloth offers polyester, satin, damask, burlap, and even blends like polyester/cotton and linen/cotton. There are a million variations of tablecloth fabrics, but choosing a theme or at least wedding colors will significantly help you narrow down your choices. Known for its durability and winkle resistant properties, polyester is the most common fabric for event tablecloths. Polyester tablecloths hold up well and are ideal for most weddings. Satin is a fabric that’s known for its luminous quality and silky feel. Satin table linens are perfect for highlighting event tables like the cake, head, or gift tables. Satin look great indoors as it reflects light very well, creating an upscale, elegant ambiance. Materials like damask, poly/cotton, and linen/cotton are heavier tablecloth fabrics resulting in a more luxurious cloth than polyester or satin linens. Are you in love with rustic chic? Burlap is the ultimate rustic wedding fabric and is the go-to choice for rustic-inspired or barnyard weddings.

Once you know the size and fabric of your wedding tablecloths, the next choice you’re presented with are color options. Most brides-to-be have a color palette or wedding theme in mind before selecting their wedding linens, and it’s definitely important to keep in mind when shopping for round tablecloths. If you’re planning on adding depth to your wedding tablescapes with table runners, table overlays, napkins, chair covers, and chair cover sashes, remember the linens must be color coordinated.

    1. Hello, Thank you for the inquiry. The 90×156 would be the best fit from what we carry. It would give you a drop of 27 inches on the long sides- almost to the floor- and 18 in on the short sides- just a little more than halfway! I hope this helps!
